The Archivio Generale Arcivescovile is open to the public fifteen hours every week: Thursday and Friday from 10 to 13:30 and from 14:30 to 18:30. The archive is usually closed during the summer months, Christmas and Easter holidays, as well as for major diocesan celebrations and national civil holidays. More information about the closing days is provided under the ‘Announcements‘ section of the website and at the archive’s entrance.
All documents are available for consultation, except for those produced in the last seventy years (as established by canonical law), few documents of particular sensitivity and those under special restrictions (such as records sub secreto). In order to access any of these restricted materials, one must request permission from the Ordinary and then present the original permission to those in charge of the materials.
One can make digital copies of documents with personal handheld technology (such as mobile phones or digital cameras without flash), or by asking the archivist. One can also request photocopies upon approval from those in charge of the archive (this excludes parchments, bound documents, and documents in states of poor conservation).
One may consult the archive’s library, which specializes in local ecclesiastic history.
We recommend sending an email in advance of your visit with any questions you may have regarding the archives’ operations or to learn more about accessing specific information.
